As Nações Unidas lançaram uma investigação sobre um ataque não identificado a um carro da ONU em Rafah na segunda-feira, que levou à primeira morte de um membro da equipe internacional da organização desde 7 de outubro, disse uma autoridade. porta-voz da secretaria-geral nesta quarta-feira (15).
O funcionário, um oficial militar indiano reformado chamado Waibhav Anil Kale, trabalhava no Departamento de Segurança e Protecção da ONU e no momento do ataque estava a caminho de um hospital em Rafah com um colega, que ficou ferido.
O Ministério das Relações Exteriores da Índia disse que sua missão diplomática estava “em contato com as autoridades relevantes” para discutir a investigação e que esperava poder trazer o corpo de Kale de volta para casa.
A operação militar de Israel cercou Rafah, na parte sul da Faixa de Gaza, onde mais de 1 milhão de palestinianos procuraram abrigo desde o início do conflito. Ao mesmo tempo, as forças armadas israelenses retomaram os ataques na parte norte do enclave nesta terça-feira (14), em um dos momentos mais violentos desde o início da guerra.
Os aliados internacionais de Israel e grupos de ajuda humanitária alertaram que são contra uma incursão terrestre em Rafah, onde há uma concentração de migrantes internos palestinos e, segundo Israel, também quatro batalhões do Hamas. Em comunicado divulgado nesta segunda-feira (13), após a morte de Kale, o secretário-geral da ONU, Antonio Guterres, reiterou o “pedido urgente para um cessar-fogo humanitário imediato e a libertação de todos os reféns”, afirmando que o conflito em Gaza continua a ter sérios impactos “não apenas para civis, mas também para aqueles que trabalham com ajuda humanitária”.
As autoridades de saúde palestinianas afirmam que a operação israelita causou a morte de mais de 35 mil pessoas desde 7 de outubro e forçou a maioria dos 2,3 milhões de residentes da região a abandonar as suas casas.
Na terça-feira (14), o porta-voz da Secretaria-Geral da ONU, Farhan Haq, afirmou que a entidade criou um painel para definir os responsáveis pelo ataque.
“A investigação ainda está em fase preliminar e os detalhes sobre o incidente ainda estão sendo verificados com as Forças de Defesa de Israel”, disse Haq. Ele afirmou ainda que existem atualmente 71 funcionários internacionais da ONU em Gaza.
Israel ordenou a evacuação de partes de Rafah nos últimos dias. A principal agência da ONU que trabalha na ajuda humanitária estima que mais de 450 mil pessoas deixaram a cidade desde 6 de maio. Mais de 1 milhão de palestinos procuraram refúgio na região.
