A tecnologia foi desenvolvida por pesquisadores da Universidade de Notre Dame, nos Estados Unidos, e seus resultados foram apresentados em estudo publicado na revista científica Communications Biology.
O dispositivo possui um biochip que usa tecnologia eletrocinética para detectar biomarcadores, ou receptores ativos do fator de crescimento epidérmico (EGFRs), que são superexpressos em certos tipos de câncer, como o glioblastoma, e encontrados em vesículas extracelulares – nanopartículas secretadas por quase todas as células do corpo. .
“Vesículas extracelulares ou exossomos são nanopartículas únicas secretadas pelas células. Eles são grandes – 10 a 50 vezes maiores que uma molécula – e têm uma carga fraca. Como funciona o teste?
O biochip desenvolvido pelos pesquisadores utiliza um sensor eletrocinético pequeno e barato, do tamanho de uma caneta esferográfica. O dispositivo é capaz de distinguir EGFRs ativos de não ativos em vesículas extracelulares, aumentando a sensibilidade e seletividade diagnóstica.
O teste pode relatar a presença de EGFRs ativos nessas vesículas extracelulares, indicando a presença de glioblastoma no paciente.
“Nosso sensor eletrocinético nos permite fazer coisas que outros diagnósticos não conseguem”, diz Satyajyoti Senapati, professor associado de pesquisa de engenharia química e biomolecular na Notre Dame e coautor do estudo. “Podemos carregar sangue diretamente, sem qualquer pré-tratamento, para isolar as vesículas extracelulares, porque nosso sensor não é afetado por outras partículas ou moléculas. Ela apresenta baixo ruído e torna a nossa tecnologia mais sensível para detecção de doenças do que outras tecnologias.”
Segundo os pesquisadores, o teste leva menos de uma hora para ser realizado, sendo necessários apenas 100 microlitros de sangue. Além disso, esta é uma alternativa barata, já que cada biochip custa menos de US$ 2 (cerca de R$ 11,29) em materiais para sua fabricação. De acordo com Chang, a equipe está explorando a tecnologia para diagnosticar o câncer de pâncreas e potencialmente outras doenças, como doenças cardiovasculares, demência e epilepsia.
